I work for a small electrical company, and my company does work on job sites throughout the tri-county area. I live ~45 minutes away from the main office, so for the most part I'm driving to job sites that are no more than ~25 minutes away from home(they mainly keep me close to home).
Today I was ordered to go down to the office and meet up with a few coworkers to drive further south from the office to Miami in a company van... No big deal. Miami is roughly ~45 minutes from the office both ways. Our leadman agreed that if we could finish all of our work before clock out time(3:30), we could head back to the office a little early so we can avoid traffic. Well we finish our work as planned, and it's 2:30, so we all clean up, pack the van, and head back to the office.
There was still traffic heading back north and we didn't make it to the parking lot of the office until 4:00, so 30 mins after clock out time. I ask my coworker before we all leave for the afternoon Do we get paid for the extra 30 mins, since we came back to the office late?" He looks at me and says, "Honestly no.". So I just say okay. I even asked my other coworkers and they both said no as well.
I'm still kind of new to FT/40 hour week work, but I know there are some companies that are strict about OT. I don't feel that was right for us to not get paid past our clock out time. My hours are not documented through me as well, they're always documented through a higher up in the office.
Am I overthinking this entire situation or is there something I need to say or do so this doesn't happen again? Because none of my team, that I worked with that day, seemed to really care or weren't even concerned.
