How can I respectfully request a lay off instead of a demotion?

I’m lucky to have had slight advance warning at least, but this situation sucks.

Ideally, I’d ask them to shove it, but the job market sucks, and I’m trying to keep an income. If not my salary, then unemployment.

The “reason”: insubordination, incompetence in current role. I disagree with this, there have been no write ups, we don’t have HR.

The terms:

  1. Reduction in pay by 30%
  2. Change in title (Manager to Admin Assistant)
  3. Essentially become someone’s errand person

I’ve prepared my counter proposal with terms I prefer, and if that gets denied, the least terms I’m willing to accept.

So, presuming we can’t come to an agreement, what do I say? Just, “no”? Followed by silence? Are they then firing me?
