When is it safe to renege offer acceptance? New job lined up before even started ‘current’ one

I am set to start a new job in May for which I felt the compensation was unfairly low but I accepted it as a frightened senior in college. I continued to interview (probably scummy/in bad taste, sorry) and I got an offer at a better company for a staggeringly larger pay rate as well. I have accepted the new offer. I am very scared of reneging from the first place and then maybe hearing ‘something went wrong, sorry we’re not proceeding’ from the second place and being left with nothing. When is it safe to do this? I hope I can renege prior to starting at the first company (out of politeness and saving them from a costly/annoying onboarding process), but what if the first company’s start date comes around and I haven’t been given a start date for the second one yet? Reddit take the wheel, please tell me what to do. First big kid job.
