A company changed the job title I was interviewing for without notifying me. Why would they do this?
I interviewed for a systems analyst position at a state organization in late July. I asked HR if there was an update a couple of weeks later and I was met with silence.
I assumed they hired someone else or were not interested, so I moved on. Then earlier this month HR called me and asked if I would still be interested in the position. After making sure it was for the same role and responsibilities, I said yes. They told me I would have to go back and interview in person with a manager. While annoyed, I agreed to do it. They also asked if I would be okay with a salary much lower than I was expecting... I was expecting ~20% salary increase with the job, but would end up with about a ~10% increase after some negotiating... fwiw this was discussed over the phone and not in writing.
Because this is a state employer, I can look up salaries for roles. I again looked up the salaries for people who had the role I THOUGHT I was interviewing for the second time around, and they were much higher than what they wanted to pay me. This upset me, but I decided I would interview again anyways.
The morning of the interview, I was looking at instructions in an email they sent to me regarding when to meet, directions, etc.. I notice that the role they had listed in this email was different than the original role I interviewed for back in July. I was now interviewing for a "technical analyst" position. I thought maybe there was some confusion or it was a mistake. I double checked the previous emails I have received from them to confirm there was a change in the job title. The interview went well, but when I asked why the role title had changed, I was met with looks of confusion and was re-assured that the role was the same responsibilities.
When I got home from the interview, I tried to look up salaries for this new title and could not find any employees with this title. FWIW, I am currently a state employee at a different organization, so they can look up my salary as well.
My question is:
- I kind of feel like I was tricked either by HR or management (or both?). Is it fair to feel this way?
- Assuming it was intentional, why would they do this? I feel like it may have been done to help justify a lower salary.
- While I have not received an offer yet, I feel like the interview went well. Should they call me with an offer, would it be rude to re-negotiate up to a salary for the previous role? Should I also try to get them to go back to the original job title? I feel like keeping this title would screw me over long term since literally no one else at this organization has that title.
**TL;DR:** After months of silence, a company called me again asking if I would like to re-interview for a job. They claimed it was the same role, but later I found out I had interviewed for a different role title with the same responsibilities. They also want to pay me much less than what I was expecting. No one else at this company has this job title. Should I be upset by this? Should I re-negotiate a salary back up to what I was expecting and try to get the original role title back?
