Only promoted for a week?

I'm posting this on behalf of my girlfriend, she was supposed to be getting promoted to manager this week at a certain retail store. Her boss pulled her aside and talked to her and told her that she would be promoted to manager until the 17th (of this month) and then it would be reverted back to a full-time cashier with the pay and responsibilities being reverted back to how they are now. The reason being is someone is transferring from out of state to her store on that date.

Has this happened to anyone before? I think she is just being taken advantage of but despite that, she wants to stay at this company and is just hoping she will get promoted later... Any comments or advice would be helpful thanks!
