how do i move up within a role to eventually become a chef?

hi! this is probably a stupid question, but i'd love to become a chef in the future. i'd specifically like to work in restaurants serving east/south east asian food. i am applying for kitchen porter jobs in such restaurants currently, with the idea of eventually moving up in roles, such as from a kitchen porter to a kitchen assistant etc, eventually working my way up into becomimg a chef. is this a realistic plan which will actually work? if not, what is the best to go about this? thanks!

also, i am only 16 right now! so lots of time for career progression :).
