Should I move on or follow up?

This is my 3rd time interviewing for a job ever so apologies if this is an asinine question.

Some background: I had an interview for a clerical position with the managing partner of a law firm. It was casual (he started swearing at one point), and we primarily discussed our mutual interests and my questions about the role. He asked only 2 basic questions about my qualifications.

I sent my thank you email. He replied saying I was prime candidate, gave me the name of a book to start reading to prepare for the position, and asked for references and one more writing sample (I had already sent 3 with my job application). I sent the writing sample on Friday afternoon (4/3) and he replied saying he would read it “ASAP”, but I’ve received no response since then. I checked in with my references and they said he hasn’t reached out to them either.

Is it safe to assume I’m no longer in the running, or should I ask for an update?
