Background: I’m gay and in a long term relationship. GF got her dream job w great pay several states away so I’m hunting for a new job in the months before we move.
Had an informal phone call “interview” today after getting lucky with submitting an unsolicited resume. When I was asked why I was looking for a job several states away, I responded with something along the lines of “I’ve always wanted to live in XX state and the chips are falling into place right now to make this move happen” etc.
I’m not necessarily lying but it’s not 100% the truth and it felt pretty wishy-washy as an answer. The problem is I don’t really want to out myself in an interview. I would rather get hired and see what the company culture is like before ripping that bandaid off. Is there a better way to answer this question in future interviews without giving away that it’s my GF’s new job that is the catalyst for our move?
Alternatively...if I’m moving from a state with great LGBT workplace protection laws to a state with almost NONE, would it be better to out myself in an interview and potentially dodge a bullet if something like that changes their mind? I’m out in every aspect of life except for work so wondering if I should do things a little differently this time around. Appreciate any input!
