ELI5 Paid/Unpaid Breaks

I started working as a temp worker, labourer type stuff. They schedule us for 9 hour shift (12pm-9pm) with one 30mins paid break and two 15mins unpaid. The two 15s seem to kinda mandatory but they're unpaid. Its like minimum wage so my complaint is I don't want to be at work unpaid at all. They're laying claim to 9hours of my life and only paying for 8.5 and I'm supposed to be cool with that?

My preference would be scheduled for 8hour shift (12pm -8pm) take my one paid 30mins break and thats it. Why the hell would everybody agree to unpaid but still at work?

Like is this some weird way to avoid paying overtime to people?

I looked up the legislation on it and where I live its for every 5hours of working you are entitled to 30mins paid break.

I may have just over thought this and confused myself into knots.
