How flexible are to and from locations when a company flies an interviewer out?

I currently live in California, and am graduating and want to work in NYC after graduating. I recently interviewed with a small consulting firm on the phone, and I thought it was a really good fit with the projects I would be working on, and because they are small there is not as much competition (though the firm is certainly interviewing other people who might be as equally qualified). However, they want me to come in person for an interview, and I am kind of on the fence whether I want to devote my own resources into flying to and from NYC.

I also have another interview on the east coast where the company will be flying me out and paying for travel. I have not been able to talk about logistics with them in booking the flights, but my thought was I might be able to save money by first flying to the east coast location and then asking the company to fly me to New York after the interview instead of back to California, so I would only have to pay for a one way ticket from NYC back to California. Are companies usually flexible on the locations of travel, to and from the interview? The company gave me relatively short notice, since I only got this interview because someone else did not want it, and I will be having the interview in ~2 weeks. The interview is also during spring break, so i was thinking I could pass this off as "I was going to visit family in spring break but had to change my plans to account for this interview, so if I could be dropped in NYC I could still stick to my spring break plans" - would this be a reasonable request or would this be obviously milking the company's resources too much and maybe impact a hiring decision?
