Can I ask potential employer if they plan on hiring me?

(Tldr at bottom for anyone who doesn't wanna hear me ramble).
Okay, I know the title sounds sleazy, but hear me out. I'm just out of high school, trying to figure everything out. This particular potential employer is leading me to believe I have a good shot at getting this position, but I don't want to waste any more time and money if they plan on hiring someone else. I've had two in person interviews, a shadow day (unpaid) and I have had to pay money to obtain an i.d. in order to pay more money to be fingerprinted. This is several hours and time I spent myself, as well as drive time/travel expenses, and I want to know if it's even worth it. How do I do this? I'm getting a job because I don't have money, I can't afford to spend any more now. My family is in a really tight spot if I don't get this job. Do I explain all this or will I sound shitty and like a sob story? I want to maintain my professional approach, but I'm lost, I'm still a kid. Nothing else around me is available, I'm in a small town where everything is filled. My parents, sibling and I all share one vehicle. I'm putting so much into a job I don't even have yet.

Tl;dr - can I ask a recruiter I've met with several times if she wants to continue the hiring process with me? I am contributing a lot of time and money into a job I don't have yet, and my family is on our way to being evicted as it is. I need to know sooner rather than later.
